Nederland Real Estate Information

Nederland is a medium sized community fond in the southeastern portion of the state of Texas, close to the Gulf of Mexico. Nederland has a population of approximately seventeen thousand four hundred residents, and is technically considered a city of the Lone Star State. Nederland is considered a part of the Beaumont-Port Arthur Metropolitan Statistical Area, which offers any conveniences not found in Nederland itself. Nederland covers a total area of approximately five and two thirds square miles, although there are no lakes, rivers, or other bodies of water included within that total. Nederland is somewhat racially socioeconomically homogeneous, a statistic partially explained by the comparatively high levels of income in the city of Nederland. Nederland is found in the central eastern portion of Jefferson County, bordering the city of Port Arthur.

The area which is now known as Nederland was originally inhabited by Native Americans of the Atakapa Tribe, who were the only residents of the Gulf Coast for thousands of years. The area was explored by French and Spanish explorers during the sixteenth, seventeenth, and eighteenth centuries, although they did not establish any large colonies in the region. Although this is not typical for the state of Texas, the first permanent settlements in the area were founded by the Dutch, who named the community “Nederland”, the Dutch word for the Netherlands. Nederland was officially incorporated in the year nineteen forty eight, and had an economy that transitioned from agriculture to petroleum to residential services.
